How the Canada Sales Tax Calculator Works

Canada has a federal 5% GST, and each province either adds its own sales tax or combines both into a single HST. Pick your province and the calculator applies the right combination: GST alone (Alberta and the territories), GST plus a provincial tax (British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec), or one harmonized rate (Ontario and the Atlantic provinces). Switch to Remove sales tax to find the price before tax from a total.

In Quebec the QST is calculated on the price, not on the price plus GST, so the combined rate is simply 5% + 9.975%. In British Columbia, Manitoba and Saskatchewan the provincial tax applies to fewer goods and services than GST does, so the real tax on an item can be lower than the combined rate. Rates change; check the Canada Revenue Agency and your provincial finance ministry for the latest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between GST, HST and PST?

Toggle answer
GST is the 5% federal goods and services tax. HST (harmonized sales tax) combines the federal and provincial parts into one rate and is used in Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island. PST, RST and QST are provincial taxes charged in addition to GST in British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Quebec.

Which provinces only charge 5% GST?

Toggle answer
Alberta, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon charge only the 5% federal GST. Alberta has no provincial sales tax at all.

How much sales tax do you pay in Ontario?

Toggle answer
Ontario charges a 13% HST on most goods and services, made up of the 5% federal part and an 8% provincial part. A 100 purchase costs 113.

How do I calculate sales tax in Quebec?

Toggle answer
Quebec charges 5% GST plus 9.975% QST. Both are calculated on the price before tax, so the combined rate is 14.975%. A 100 purchase costs 114.98.

Is everything subject to sales tax in Canada?

Toggle answer
No. Basic groceries, most prescription drugs and some other items are zero-rated for GST, and provincial taxes exempt different things. This calculator applies the full combined rate to the whole price, so adjust the price if only part of it is taxable.
