Formula: Sale price = Original × (1 − Discount%)

How the Discount Calculator Works

Enter the original price and the percent off to see the sale price and exactly how much you save. Add an extra discount to see what two stacked offers really come to, or add sales tax to see the final amount at the till. Switch to Find original price if you only know the sale price and the percent off.

Discount Formulas

Savings = Price × Discount% ÷ 100  |  Sale price = Price − Savings
Question Formula Example
Sale pricePrice × (1 − Discount%)80 at 20% off = 80 × 0.80 = 64
Amount savedPrice × Discount%80 × 0.20 = 16
Original priceSale price ÷ (1 − Discount%)60 after 25% off = 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80
Two discountsPrice × (1 − d1) × (1 − d2)100 at 20% then 10% = 100 × 0.8 × 0.9 = 72
Stacked discounts do not add up. 20% off followed by 10% off is a 28% total discount, not 30%, because the second discount is taken from the already-reduced price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate a discount?

Toggle answer
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage and divide by 100 to get the amount saved, then subtract it from the original price. Example: 20% off 80 = 80 × 20 ÷ 100 = 16 saved, so the sale price is 64. A shortcut is to multiply the original price by (1 − discount%): 80 × 0.80 = 64.

How do two discounts combine (for example 20% off plus 10% off)?

Toggle answer
The second discount applies to the already-reduced price, so they do not add up. 20% off then 10% off is not 30% off. On a price of 100: after 20% off it is 80, and 10% off 80 is 72, so the total discount is 28%.

How do I find the original price from the sale price?

Toggle answer
Divide the sale price by (1 − discount%). Example: a jacket costs 60 after 25% off, so the original price was 60 ÷ 0.75 = 80. Use the "Find original price" tab of this calculator to do it automatically.

Is sales tax added before or after the discount?

Toggle answer
In most places sales tax is calculated on the discounted price, so a discount also reduces the tax you pay. Some coupons, such as manufacturer coupons in some US states, are applied after tax is calculated. This calculator applies tax to the price after discounts, which is the common case.

How much is 20% off?

Toggle answer
20% off means you pay 80% of the price. Take 10% of the price and double it to get the amount saved. For example, 20% off 150 saves 30, so you pay 120.
