Loan & Mortgage Calculators

A loan can look affordable when you only see the monthly payment. The real cost is the total interest you pay over the whole term. These calculators show both, so you can compare offers before you sign anything.

Use the Loan Calculator to see your monthly payment (EMI), total interest and a repayment schedule for a home, car or personal loan. For visitors using US or Canadian dollars it also adds property tax, insurance and PMI for a mortgage. When you are choosing between two offers, such as a shorter or longer term, or a lower rate with higher fees, the Loan Comparison calculator puts them side by side.

Which calculator should I use?

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a loan EMI calculated?

Toggle answer
EMI = [P × R × (1+R)ⁿ] ÷ [(1+R)ⁿ − 1], where P is the loan amount, R is the monthly interest rate (annual rate ÷ 12 ÷ 100) and n is the number of monthly payments. Each payment is the same, but early payments are mostly interest and later payments are mostly principal.

Is a shorter or longer loan term better?

Toggle answer
A shorter term has a higher monthly payment but costs much less interest overall. A longer term lowers the payment but increases the total cost. Enter both terms in the Loan Comparison calculator to see the difference in total interest, then check that the higher payment fits comfortably in your budget.

What is the difference between a fixed and a floating rate?

Toggle answer
A fixed rate stays the same for the agreed period, so your payment is predictable. A floating (variable) rate follows a benchmark and can move up or down. Fixed rates are often priced slightly higher. Ask your lender how and how quickly rate changes are passed on, and whether you can prepay without a fee.
